KIA SORENTO( 4X4)

ON THE ROAD

Performance
The revised Sorento range is available with two uprated engines. We’ve tested the 168bhp 2.5-litre turbodiesel, which provides extra muscle for overtaking than the engine it replaces. It delivers its power more progressively, too, and is reasonably fuel-efficient. There’s also a 238bhp 3.3-litre V6 petrol.

Ride & handling
The mid-2006 revisions included tweaks to the suspension and steering. However, the Sorento is unsettled by undulations, while there’s also a fair amount of body lean through corners, even by off-roader standards. The steering could do with a lot more feel, but handling is otherwise okay. The Sorento is very capable off-road.

Refinement
Despite the separate chassis and tough off-road suspension, the Sorento is reasonably quiet on the road. Those large tyres inevitably kick up lots of road noise, while you might also notice a little wind whistle as speeds build. Engine noise is effectively kept out of the cabin, however.
